Salem Spartans’ skipper Abhishek Tanwar created an unwanted record on Wednesday (June 13) during Match No. 2 of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2023, which was played at the SNR College Cricket Ground in Coimbatore between Salem Spartans and Chepauk Super Gillies. The 31-year-old cricketer, who bowls at medium pace, conceded 18 runs on the last ball of the Super Gillies innings to create an embarrassing record.
The right-arm medium pacer was bowling the last over of Chepauk Super Gillies’ innings and bowled three back-to-back no balls and then a wide before finally bowling a legitimate delivery. In a total of five balls, he conceded as many as 18 runs, which etched his name in the history books, but for an unwanted reason.
The incident took place on the last ball, when the Super Gillies were at 199 for five and Sanjay Yadav was on strike. With just one delivery remaining, Tanwar bowled a yorker and nailed it to perfection to shatter Yadav’s stumps, but unfortunately, he had overstepped and the umpire signalled it as a no ball.
The next ball was a free-hit, in which Sanjay smacked a six on a low full toss, but again, Tanwar overstepped, and it was again declared a no-ball.
Yadav ran two on the second free-hit of the over, but this time again, it was declared a no-ball. He then bowled a wide, and the free hit remained in place. And finally, on the fifth attempt, Tanwar managed to bowl a legitimate delivery but was smacked for a six by Yadav, who took his team’s tally to 217 for 5 in 20 overs.
