​Amazon Layoffs 2023: Amazon Fires Employees from Advertising Team ​

Shortly after announcing 9,000 layoffs, Amazon Inc fired employees from the advertising team today, April 20, 2023.

​​Advertising Team Laid off​

As per a CNBC report, employees from the ads team from US and Canada were impacted in the latest round of layoffs at Amazon. The employees were informed regarding the layoffs through an internal memo shared by Paul Kotas, Senior Vice President of Advertising.

What the internal memo said​

This morning we took the difficult step of informing Amazon Ads team members who were impacted by role reductions in the U.S. and Canada. In other regions, we are following local policies which require additional time and process steps, including consultation with employee representative bodies. We will communicate with affected employees in other regions in accordance with those policies and timelines.

Layoffs in order to improve long term growth​

Earlier in the year, CEO Andy Jassy had stated that the company would be focusing on prioritising resources, increasing the benefits to customers and the long term health of Amazon. In order to move ahead, certain roles from the ads department were eliminated.

​​Number of people impacted unknown​

The official number of the people impacted by this round of Amazon Layoffs is yet to be revealed. However, it has been confirmed that is part of the 9,000 layoffs announced earlier this year.

Amazon Layoffs 2023 announced for 18,000

In January 2023, Amazon had announced it would be laying off an additional 8,000 employees. Amazon Inc has already announced it would be firing 10,000 people in November 2022.

​Amazon Layoffs to impact a total of 27,000 people​

Amazon Inc had already announced 18,000 layoffs in November 2022 and January 2023. Adding to this number, CEO Andy Jassy announced 9,000 additional job cuts. Hence, a total of 27,000 people are expected to lose their jobs.

In Amazon's 29-year-history, this is the biggest round of layoffs made at the company.

The layoffs spree of 2023 seems to be never-ending. On April 19, 2023, Meta has shared that it would be laying off more people apart from the 11,000 layoffs announced in March.
