Trilateral Highway Connecting Bangkok With Kolkata Likely To Launch In 4 Years
The proposed project plan for the trilateral highway involves starting from Bangkok and passing through cities such as Sukhothai and Mae Sot in Thailand, Yangon, Mandalay, Kalewa, and Tamu in Myanmar, before reaching India.

Kolkata: During a business conclave organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday, commerce ministers from various countries and provinces in the region expressed optimism that the trilateral highway connecting Bangkok with Kolkata as part of the BIMSTEC project could be completed within the next three to four years.
The proposed project plan for the trilateral highway involves starting from Bangkok and passing through cities such as Sukhothai and Mae Sot in Thailand, Yangon, Mandalay, Kalewa, and Tamu in Myanmar, before reaching India. In India, the highway is expected to pass through Moreh, Kohima, Guwahati, Srirampur, Siliguri, and finally Kolkata, covering a total distance of over 2,800 km. The longest stretch of the highway would be in India, while the smallest stretch would be in Thailand.
The Thai vice minister of foreign affairs, Vijavat Isarabhakdi, confirmed that the portion of the highway in Thailand has already been completed. The Myanmar commerce minister, Aung Naing Oo, stated that the portion in his country is likely to be ready within three years. Isarabhakdi emphasized that the trilateral road connectivity up to Kolkata is progressing well and that the highway is nearly complete in Thailand.
The completion of the entire highway, however, depends on progress in Myanmar and the Indian portion. The Thai minister mentioned that the total stretch of the highway could exceed 2,500 kilometers. The Myanmar commerce minister informed TOI that work on the trilateral highway has resumed and estimated a completion time of two to three years. Shashi Panja, the commerce and industries minister who attended the conclave, expressed the state's anticipation for this road link.
