ARVIND KEJRIWAL
Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian politician currently serving as the seventh Chief Minister of Delhi. He is also the national Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party.
A former bureaucrat and activist, Kejriwal had worked with the Indian Revenue Service as a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax in the national capital. While still employed by the IRS, he had been one of the founding members of a found a movement named Parivartan, using the Right to Information to counter corruption. In 2005 Kejriwal and his present day deputy CM, Manish Sisodia had launched a second organisation called Kabir along similar lines. The next year, they launched the Public Cause Research Foundation.
Kejriwal had also been heavily involved in social activist Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement in 2011, becoming an integral part of the India Against Corruption team and protesting the introduction of the Jan Lokpal bill.
Differences within the group eventually prompted him to part ways and launch his own political outfit.
The Aam Aadmi Party was established in November 2012, with Kejriwal contesting the 2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections. While he did manage to defeat incumbent CM Sheila Dikshit, the AAP's stint at the helm of a minority government in a hung Assembly was brief. 49 days after taking oath as CM, Kejriwal resigned.
In the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, Kejriwal who had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections against Narendra Modi the previous year, led his party to a massive victory, winning 67 of the 70 constituencies. The AAP-led Delhi government secured another consecutive term in 2020, recording a landslide 62 seat win.
