Uttar Pradesh is poised to become the largest ethanol producer in India during the ongoing fiscal year of 2023-24, with approximately 100 operational distilleries, according to an IANS report.
Sanjay Bhoosreddy , the Additional Chief Secretary of Sugarcane and Excise , has stated that currently 85 distilleries are operational in Uttar Pradesh, and an additional 15 distilleries are expected to become operational in the coming months.
The IANS report added that these 100 distilleries will be a mix of sugarcane-based and dual-mode facilities that use both cane and grain as feedstock. The state government has set a target of increasing the number of distilleries to 140 within the next three years, primarily driven by investments received during the global investor summit held earlier this year.
Furthermore, the government intends to promote grain-based distilleries, considering the ample stocks of paddy and wheat available. In 2022-23, ethanol production in Uttar Pradesh reached 134 crore litres, the highest in the country. As per the report, it is projected to increase to 160 crore litres in 2023-24.
To support the increased ethanol production, the state government plans to establish additional fuel storage facilities in two zones: the Gorakhpur-Basti-Azamgarh stretch and the Meerut-Moradabad belt. These projects will be executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways and Petroleum. The government is actively pursuing the establishment of these facilities.
Uttar Pradesh has been ensuring a 12 per cent ethanol blending rate, while industry sources indicate that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) such as HPCL have achieved an 11.63 per cent blending rate. Contract execution for 520 crore litres has taken place between December 2022 and October 2023, with approximately 240 crore litres already lifted by the OMCs as of May 2023.
