Former Indian men’s cricket team captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly is all set to replace legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting as the head coach of the Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Capitals . The 50-year-old former left-handed batter, who re-joined the Delhi Capitals as Director of Cricket in IPL 2023 earlier this year, will replace Ponting, who is most likely to leave the job after DC finished at the second-last position in IPL 2023.
According to a report published in Bengali media outlet Sangbad Pratidin, Ganguly is all set to replace Ponting for the men’s team head coach’s position. He will also be addressing his role as Director of Cricket at the franchise.
Ponting, who won the IPL title as head coach with the Mumbai Indians in 2015, has been associated with the Delhi Capitals since IPL 2018, and under his mentorship, Delhi reached the final of the IPL for the first time in the 2020 season. In 2021, DC finished at the top of the points table but lost both qualifiers. But in the last two seasons, Delhi has failed to reach the playoffs. They finished fifth in IPL 2022 and ninth this year.
Ponting, who featured for Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors India as a player during the initial seasons of the IPL, was the Director of Cricket for DC in the 2019 season, well before he joined the BCCI as President. In that season, Delhi performed well under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy and secured a place in the playoffs. After taking charge of BCCI, Ganguly had to leave his role, but he remained on good terms with DC owners and players, which is why after he was removed from the role of BCCI president last year, he re-joined the side ahead of the cash-rich league this year.
But unlike the first inning, he didn’t have the same success this year, and now, if promoted to the head coach role, which will be his first job in that profile, Ganguly would be eager to end DC’s wait for a first IPL title.
