Guwahati: A shocking incident has unfolded in Assam as the lifeless body of Jonali Nath, a prominent BJP leader from Goalpara district, was discovered on Sunday night near a highway. Police arrested her partner, Hasanur Islam, in connection with the brutal murder on Monday evening.
According to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Jonali had been involved in an extramarital affair with Hasanur for over two years. Hasanur is a Congress ward member in the Matia area of Goalpara, while Jonali served as the district secretary of the BJP in Goalpara.
During interrogation, Hasanur admitted to having a relationship with Jonali for more than two years but claimed that he had recently married another woman, which upset Jonali.
Inspector General of CID, Debraj Upadhyay, stated that Hasanur confessed to an altercation with Jonali inside his car on Sunday night. The argument erupted when she questioned him about his marriage. Agitated Hasanur repeatedly struck her face until she lost consciousness.
Although doctors reported that a blunt object was used to cause Jonali's death, Hasanur told the police that he continued to strike her face until she became unconscious. He abandoned her near the roadside and drove away after he realised that she is dead. The car, which was later found to have bloodstains matching Jonali's, also showed evidence of her head being forcefully hit against it.
According to the police, Jonali became aware of Hasanur's wedding and began calling him, but he initially avoided her. Eventually, Hasanur agreed to meet her on Sunday and picked her up from a market area in Matia.
Jonali's relatives mentioned that she left home on Sunday around 4:30 p.m. for personal reasons. Her husband tried to contact her after 7 p.m. but was unsuccessful. After notifying the police, the family discovered her body around midnight.
The police tracked Jonali's location by examining her call logs after Hasanur switched off her mobile phone at 7:13 p.m. to avoid any disturbances.
While some of Jonali's supporters claimed she was raped before being killed, District Superintendent of Police Rajesh Reddy stated that there was no evidence of sexual assault based on the doctors' findings. The police are continuing their investigation and questioning the accused for further details.
