Barricades Still Up Ashram Flyover Loop Work Stuck Amid Fund Crunch
New Delhi: The Ashram flyover loop that takes commuters from Sarai Kale Khan on to the flyover towards south Delhi is till pending even after three months since the Ashram flyover extension was thrown open for public use. According to the Public Works Department (PWD) official in charge of the project, lack of funds has delayed the completion of that part of the flyover extension project.
“The work has stopped because we do not have the required money to pay the contractor. The company, to whom we already owe around Rs 15 crore, has refused to continue without the outstanding bills being paid,” revealed a PWD official.
“We have sent the project file to the government for sanction of funds. Once we receive funds, we will restart the work,” the official said further.
The unfinished work on the loop continues to be a major inconvenience for residents. The incomplete loop from Sarai Kale Khan forces motorists coming from ITO and north Delhi areas or from the Delhi-Meerut Expressway to avoid the new facility and traffic on Ring Road.

Barricades still up at Ashram Flyover loop

Work on construction of the loop has now been stopped for the time being. PWD minister Atishi had claimed, in May, that it would be completed in five days however, a spot check on Monday revealed that while the ramp is almost ready, the approach road to the ramp has no bitumen cover and the spot remains barricaded.
The Ashram flyover extension was inaugurated on March 6, but it was not opened to heavy commercial vehicles initially due to the presence of high-tension power lines. These were shifted only last month, after which restrictions were removed.
The flyover consists of two ramps and one main carriageway connecting with DND Flyway. The exit ramp towards Sarai Kale Khan was opened soon after the inauguration, but the corresponding one from Ring Road climbing onto the flyover has been under-construction since March.
The construction of the extension to Ashram flyover started in June 2020 and was supposed to be wrapped up within a year, but it got delayed due to reasons like the Covid 19-induced lockdown and construction ban due to high pollution. The flyover is one of the busiest stretches in Delhi with Mathura Road and DND Flyway connected with it.
