Ahmedabad: As cyclonic storm Biparjoy grew stronger on Sunday and approached the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat, the state government took precautionary measures by closing beaches and reaching out to coastal residents. The Disaster Management Division of the National Emergency Response Centre, under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, issued an advisory to the Gujarat government, urging them to closely monitor the situation, regularly assess the areas, and take appropriate precautions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for several districts in Gujarat, including Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagarh, and Morbi, for June 14 and 15. According to the IMD bulletin, Biparjoy is expected to make landfall between Mandvi in Kutch (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) on June 15, as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph.

The IMD also mentioned that sea conditions would be very rough over the next three days, and the state may experience squally winds gusting up to 195 kmph on Sunday. However, the wind speed is expected to gradually decrease starting from Monday.
Late on Saturday, the surface wind speed increased in peninsular Saurashtra as Biparjoy changed direction towards the northeast and approached the coast. Jamnagar city witnessed thundershowers accompanied by stormy winds, resulting in uprooted trees and disrupted vehicular traffic.
To ensure safety, the Gujarat government closed popular sea beaches such as Chowpaty in Porbandar, Shivrajpur near Dwarka in Devbhumi Dwarka, and Mandvi in the Kutch district. Officials and staff at fishing harbours along the state's coastline made announcements, warning people that they might need to relocate to safer areas if the cyclone continued to approach the Saurashtra coast.
The IMD also issued a wind warning until June 15, stating that gale wind speeds of 155 to 165 kmph gusting to 180 kmph could prevail over the East Central and adjoining West Central and Northeast Arabian Sea. Squally wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph are expected on June 11, 45 to 65 kmph on June 12, and 50 to 60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph during June 13 and 14 along the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts.
The advisory further mentioned that gale wind speeds of 65 to 75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph are likely to prevail along the Kutch districts of the Gulf of Kutch, while squally wind speeds of 55 to 65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph are expected along the Saurashtra coast on June 15.
The government has advised regulating offshore and onshore activities, suspending fishing operations in the Arabian Sea, and urging fishermen not to venture out into the Central and North Arabian Sea from June 12 to 15. Those currently at sea have been advised to return to the coast.
The IMD instructed state governments to closely monitor the situation, take necessary precautions, and inform district authorities accordingly.
Considering the potential widespread impact of Cyclone Biprojoy in the state, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has postponed the school enrolment drive, Shala Praveshotsav, in six coastal districts, including Dwarika, Porbandar, Kutch, Morbi, Jamnagar, and Junagadh. In other districts, the school enrolment drive will be held on June 12 and 13 instead of three days.
