Mumbai: As Maharashtra braces for Cyclone Biparjoy, strong winds affected flight operations at the Mumbai airport, resulting in delay and cancellation of many flights. The airport witnessed utter chaos after the temporary closure of the main runway due to “inclement weather”, forcing passengers to wait for hours on Sunday night.
Air India today issued a statement saying informing passengers about the delay and cancellation and assuring that they will make all efforts to minimise the disruptions.
"Inclement weather conditions and the temporary closure of Runway 09/27 at the Mumbai airport, in addition to other consequential factors beyond our control have resulted in delays and cancellation of some of our flights. We regret the inconvenience caused to our guests, as we make all effort to minimise the disruptions."

On Sunday, four flights were diverted to other airports, while the pilots of seven arrival flights were forced to abort their first attempt at landing. The evening arrivals and departures were delayed by an average of 40 minutes.
The flights that diverted included Malaysian Airlines MH194 from Kuala Lumpur which was scheduled to land at 10.15 pm but diverted to Ahmedabad, IndiGo 6E5381 from Chennai which diverted to Ahmedabad and Air India 638 from Ahmedabad diverted to Shamshabad.

Mumbai Weather Update In View Of Cyclone Biparjoy

On Monday, coastal areas in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra witnessed high tide as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rains and thunderstorm for the city in view of cyclone Biparjoy.
A cyclone alert has been issued for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat as high tidal waves hit the beaches in Mumbai. The weather department has said that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning is likely to occur over Maharashtra's capital city in the next 3-4 hours.
According to IMD, light to moderate spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 45-55 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Thane, Raigad, Mumbai, and Palghar.
