Cyclone Biparjoy Weakens Into Very Severe Cyclonic Storm
New Delhi: The extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Cyclone Biparjoy’ on Tuesday weakened into a very severe cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The weather department said the cyclone has been moving northwards at a speed of five kilometers per hour, and is centered approximately 290 km southwest of Gujarat's Porbandar. It is expected to cross Gujarat's Saurashtra and Kutch regions as well as adjoining Pakistan coasts on Thursday.
IMD today said, "Cyclone Warning for Saurashtra and Kutch Coasts: Orange Message. VSCS BIPARJOY at 0530IST of today about 300km WSW of Porbandar, 290km SW of Devbhumi Dwarka, 340km SSW of Jakhau Port, 350km SSW of Naliya. To cross near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by the evening of 15th June as VSCS."
Authorities have already moved 7,500 people to safer places and put in place an elaborate evacuation plan in Gujarat. More than 3,000 people were evacuated from 31 villages in Porbandar, while in Devbhumi Dwarka, more than 1,500 people were shifted to safer places, they informed.
A video showed the cyclone eating up a bridge at Bet Dwarka. Meanwhile, coastal areas in Maharashtra witnessed high tide and warnings have been issued.

Cyclone Biparjoy Weakens: Latest Updates
- Police deployed near the coast in Gujarat's Navsari to prevent people from venturing into the sea, in view of cyclone 'Biparjoy'.
- The IMD on Monday said that the Cyclone Biparjoy is set to cross Gujarat's Jakhau Port on June 15 as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’.
- The weather department issued an orange alert for Gujarat's Saurashtra and Kutch regions, and said, “VSCS Biparjoy lay centered at 0230 IST of the 13th June, 2023 over Northeast and adjoining Eastcentral Arabian Sea about 290 km southwest of Porbandar & 360 km south-southwest of Jakhau Port. To cross Saurashtra & Kutch near Jakhau Port by evening of 15th June as a VSCS.”
- The Cyclonic storm is likely to enter southwest Rajasthan on June 16, the IMD said.
- The IMD has sounded orange alert in parts of Gujarat on June 14 and red alert on June 15.
- An orange alert has been sounded in Saurashtra and Kutch coast in Gujarat.
- Heavy rainfall likely in Amreli, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Junagarh, Morbi, and Kutch.
- Light to moderate rainfall is predicted in other parts of the state.
- The Border Security Force (BSF) ordered the 'safe positioning' of its marine wing assets and personnel along the Gujarat front in the wake of Cyclone 'Biparjoy'.
- Today, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya in Kachchh held a review meeting with all districts of Gujarat on preparedness, ahead of cyclone 'Biparjoy'.
