Bengaluru: The southwest monsoon is likely to enter Karnataka by Saturday, June 10, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
The monsoon is likely to make its onset over Kerala on June 1, three days ahead of the normal date of June 4. It is then expected to advance to Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat by June 5.
The IMD said that the monsoon is likely to be "normal" this year, with a rainfall of 96 to 104% of the long-period average (LPA).
The weather in Bengaluru is expected to be mostly cloudy with a few spells of rain in the coming week. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to be around 22 degrees Celsius. There is a 60% chance of rain on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The rest of the week is expected to be mostly cloudy with a few spells of rain.
The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall in Karnataka from June 10 onwards. The state is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places during the first week of June.
The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for coastal Karnataka and a green alert for the rest of the state.
A yellow alert indicates that heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places, while a green alert indicates that scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is likely.
The IMD has advised people to be prepared for the monsoon and to take necessary precautions.
The monsoon is a vital source of water for irrigation, drinking water, and hydroelectric power in Karnataka. It also helps to improve the water table and recharge groundwater aquifers.
The timely onset of the monsoon is crucial for the state's agriculture sector, which contributes to about 16% of the state's gross domestic product (GDP).
The monsoon is also important for the state's tourism industry, which is a major source of revenue for the state.
The IMD has said that the monsoon is likely to be "normal" this year, which is good news for the state.
A normal monsoon will help to improve agricultural production, boost the tourism industry, and provide relief from the heat wave conditions that have been prevailing in the state.
