India, being a hub for several industries, has long attracted students from all over the world for higher education. In recent times, however, the country has also seen a rise in students pursuing overseas education. The reasons for this are varied – ranging from the quality of education to better job opportunities and exposure to a different culture. To make this transition smoother for Indian students willing to study abroad, Australia’s Deakin University has opened its hubs in India to promote transnational education collaboration. The goal of establishing these hubs is to provide the Indian students with a pathway to gain quality education in Australia and to foster academic and research partnerships between the universities of both the countries.
“With its commitment to quality, flexibility, and inclusivity, Deakin is leading the way in transnational education collaboration, setting a new benchmark for universities across the world. We have already set up the ‘Deakin University Hubs’ in renowned Indian universities – OP Jindal Global University and Chitkara University and are currently exploring hubs with Symbiosis International University, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE),” Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin explained.
As part of the initiative, students can now commence the first part of their studies with a Deakin partner institution in India and then transfer to a Deakin campus in Australia for the second part of their educational journey.
Deakin University Hubs will act as the central point of all engagement activities, alongside strategic partners OP Jindal Global University and Chitkara University. This initiative will enhance collaboration and deliver on the National Education Policy's goal of the internationalization of education.
Deakin University hubs also offer a wide range of pathway programs and joint doctoral programs for students who want to take their academic career to the next level. The university's pathway programs are designed to help international students who may not meet the entry requirements for their desired course, providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their academic pursuits. These programs also offer a smooth transition to undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Deakin University.
Deakin also offers joint doctoral programs where students can work with internationally renowned scholars to undertake research in areas such as health, psychology, information technology, and engineering. These programs provide students with opportunities to exchange research ideas and knowledge with researchers from different institutions, leading to a more enriching research experience.
Additionally, they will provide in-country assistance for internships and connections with industry, as well as support for students and student mobility between campuses in Australia and India.
The innovation hubs will also assist development projects and consultancy activities in research, innovation, and skills development. In the last two decades, more than 13,000 Indian students have benefited with jobs and skills essential to make them employable and relevant for global citizenship.
Ravneet Pawha, Vice-President (Global Alliances) and CEO (South Asia) at Deakin says,
"The vision for Deakin University Hubs in India is firmly embedded in Deakin's 'with India, in India, for India' approach of engagement to prepare the country's youth for the future. The Hubs will act as a conduit to strengthen the university-industry-government partnership which will benefit society at large."
Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education and Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, has also lauded the initiative at several occasions, saying that he wants to align his National Education Policy with the emerging thoughts of the globe.
Deakin was the first international university to establish its presence in India in 1994, and over the last two years through its office in New Delhi, has set up innovative models of engagement to boost learning opportunities for students in India.
Deakin's dedication to providing quality education and opportunities for their students is apparent in their extensive program offerings, ensuring that students are equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in their chosen careers.
