Expect India’s Best Ever Medal Tally In Hangzhou Asian Games: Sports Minister Anurag Thakur

New Delhi: India is expected to send its largest-ever contingent for the Asian Games slated to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8, 2023. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Thursday expressed confidence that India will get its highest medal tally this year. The minister made the statement after attending the 100th Mission Olympic Cell meeting in New Delhi and reviewing the preparedness for the Asian Games.
Speaking to select media on the sidelines of the MOC meeting, Anurag Thakur said, "India will see the best-ever medal tally in Asian Games this year. We approved Rs 220 Cr for Asian Games preparations. 142 foreign camps were also approved along with 71 national camps and it benefited 2100 athletes."
With this vision in mind, he detailed the steps taken by the government of India to ensure there’s no shortage of facilities for the athletes.
  • The government of India has spent Rs. 450 crores in the current Olympic Cycle to support athletes towards foreign exposure, national camps, quality coaches, support staff and equipment.
  • More than 350 proposals of TOPS group athletes worth Rs. 45 crores approved under Ministry’s TOP Scheme in this Olympic cycle alone so far, to ensure the best possible training for our athletes.
  • In this current year, Government has already approved Rs. 220 crore towards the preparation of the Asian Games 2023.
  • Government has already supported more than 142 foreign exposures, 71 National Coaching Camps benefiting more than 2100 athletes towards preparation for Asian Games 2023.
  • Interestingly, the Government of India has also supported non-traditional sports like Kurash, Jujutsu, and Chess. A total of 600 Athletes are expected to represent India across various sports, compared to 570 in AG 2018 and 541 in 2014. This is expected to have a significant effect on India’s medal tally where one of the best performances is expected this year.
India sent a contingent of 570 and 541 athletes in the 2018 and 2014 editions of the Asiad respectively. Out of the 40 events, selection trials for more than half of the Asian Games events have already been conducted by the respective federations. The rest would be finished by June 30 -- well before July 15 which is the deadline given by the OCA for sending the shortlisted athletes.
To attract the best talent and minds to handle the operational aspects of the TOPS Scheme the Government has upgraded the salary structure of TOPS for various posts by about 35%.
India won 69 medals in the last edition of the Asian Games.
