India are set to take on Australia in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) at the Kennington Oval from June 7-11. India will look to end their trophy drought in ICC events that has persisted for 10 years, since MS Dhoni led the team to the Champions Trophy triumph in 2013. Rohit Sharma has a difficult task at hand, and now there is a possibility that he may not be able to take the field, as he suffered a blow to his left thumb during a practice session. The injury is set to be investigated once the team reaches their hotel, and if it is serious, we might see a different captain take the field tomorrow against Australia.
In case, India has to take the field without Rohit Sharma, they will have to find a new captain. Incidentally, there has been no announcement of a vice-captain for the marquee clash. India are yet to appoint a deputy to Rohit Sharma, since KL Rahul was sacked as the vice-captain of the Test team after a poor run of form. “It was decided not to name any vice-captain. Instead, the power was given to Rohit Sharma. Who will lead the side in case he has to leave the field is Rohit Sharma’s call,” a source told The Indian Express after KL Rahul's sacking.
During the 4th Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit Sharma was off the field for some time. In his absence, Cheteshwar Pujara led the team, and it is likely that the senior batter will lead the team if Rohit Sharma indeed misses out on the game due to injury. Pujara has experience leading in England as well, as he was the interim captain for some games in his County Season with Sussex.
Rohit Sharma's injury is not a serious one, according to a report by News 18 Cricketnext. the report states that thought he did not participate in the last leg of the net session after being hit by the ball on his thumb. He will, in all likelihood play in the WTC Final.
