KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • India will face Australia in the World Test Championship final
  • The fixture will be played from June 7 to 11 at the Oval
  • India's standby players have travelled to England for the WTC final
Team India is gearing up for its second World Test Championship final and the Rohit Sharma-led side will be facing Australia at The Oval from June 7 to 11. India's standby players have also landed in England and their services can be utilised if any player is unavailable for selection for the fixture.
Suryakumar Yadav, Mukesh Kumar and Yashasvi Jaiswal are India's three standby players for the fixture. Yashasvi was a late addition to the team as he replaced Ruturaj Gaikwad. Ruturaj was earlier named as a standby player but he couldn't travel to England due to his wedding.
The opening batsman tied the knot on June 3 and there was no way that he could have joined the players in England before June 5. Hence, the BCCI selection committee had to call up his replacement and Yashasvi earned his maiden India call-up.
He pipped Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was a surprising omission from the squad that was announced last month. KL Rahul retained his spot in the squad, leaving no place for Easwaran.
Both Ruturaj and Yashasvi are expected to travel to West Indies next month. While the Chennai Super Kings batsman might make it to the ODI squad, the Rajasthan Royals' opener is expected to break into the T20I team for the first time.
Yashasvi took IPL 2023 by storm and smashed 625 runs in 14 matches. The left-handed batsman batted with a strike rate of 163.61 and also created the record for hitting the fastest half-century in the league's history. Playing against Kolkata Knight Riders, Yashasvi scored a half-century off just 13 balls. He has also proven his credentials in red-ball cricket with a century against Bangladesh A in 2022.
As for Ruturaj, he is waiting for a long rope at the international level and will hope that he gets consistent chances in the 2023/24 season.
