Chennai: In good news for Chennaites, the construction work of the Chennai Metro Phase II project is picking up pace. Land acquisition for the project is nearing completion, with 92 percent of the required land already acquired by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).
Out of the total land needed for the project, which is nearly 115.6 hectares, CMRL has taken possession of 106.3 hectares. However, due to design modifications near Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), additional land is required, increasing the initial requirement of 112.72 hectares.
To ensure the convenience of pedestrians on walkways near OMR, CMRL has made changes to the station designs, resulting in the need for more land parcels. The process to acquire the additional land is currently underway.

Chennai Metro Phase II

The project aims to build 118 stations across three corridors for an efficient mass rapid transit system (MRTS). Corridor 3 will span from Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.4 km), Corridor 4 will extend from Light House to Poonamallee (26.1 km), and Corridor 5 will stretch from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (44.6 km).
The initial phase of the project is also seeing progress, and the land acquisition for station construction has already been completed for the first segment between Poonamallee and Porur, which is part of Corridor 4. CMRL authorities have taken measures to simplify and expedite the land acquisition process for Phase II.
Compared to Phase I, the station sizes in Phase II have been significantly reduced from 220 meters to 150 meters. Similarly, each station in Phase II will have only two entry and departure ports, whereas Phase I stations had four each.
The estimated cost of the Phase II project is Rs 63,246 crore, with the construction expected to be completed by the end of 2028. Phase I of the Chennai Metro comprises a 54.1 km network with two corridors: Corridor 1 from Wimco Nagar to Airport and Corridor 2 from Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount. There are 41 stations in total, with 21 underground and 20 elevated stations. The entire Phase I is currently operational.
