A video obtained by TOI displayed the boy driving a Jeep Compass at 140 km/h, swerving in an attempt to overtake another vehicle before colliding with a bike and several cars stopped at a traffic signal near the owl statue crossing. Throughout the race, loud music was blaring from their vehicles.
An investigating officer stated, "The boy was driving at a high speed and lost control of the car when he attempted to brake at the crossing. The boys were out for a joyride and had planned the race in advance, as at least three cars were involved."
The teenager, hailing from Bally in Howrah, was driving his father's car without a license. He has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including attempt to commit culpable homicide, rash and negligent driving, causing grievous hurt, and mischief. The boy was presented before a juvenile court in Salt Lake on Monday and has been remanded in 14 days' custody at a juvenile home.
The condition of the biker, Chittaranjan Mondal, who was struck by the car, remains critical. He underwent surgery at a private hospital in Topsia. Although his condition is grave, the fact that he was wearing a high-quality helmet securely fastened to his head saved him from severe head injuries. Without the helmet, surviving such a brutal impact would have been difficult.
In response to the recent accidents involving cars hitting bikers on the New Town stretch, Bidhannagar Police has taken additional measures for road safety. They have installed extra speed guns along the road between Eco Park gates 1 and 2 to manually detect speeding vehicles. They are also issuing speed tickets based on the automatic speed guns.
Additional personnel have been deployed to manage traffic during the night and early morning hours when most speeding accidents occur. While trucks and buses are limited to a speed of 40 km/h on the New Town Main arterial road, cars and bikes are expected to maintain a speed limit of 50 km/h.
An officer from Bidhannagar City police stated, "Car drivers and bikers tend to exceed the speed limit along this stretch between Eco Park gate 1 and 2. In fact, we prosecute close to 100 vehicles daily on this stretch. However, due to the recent accidents in the area, we have increased our efforts and set up manual speed guns to catch speeding drivers on the road."
