India and Australia will renew their storied rivalry and square off in the final of the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) from June 7 to 11. The fixture will be played at The Oval, a venue where spin could play an important role. The weather isn't quite overcast during this period in England.
But nothing can be predicted accurately when it comes to England's weather and the rain gods often spoil live action there. So what happens if it rains during the WTC final? Will the two teams be able to make up for the lost time?
The ICC has confirmed that there is a Reserve Day in place for the final of the World Test Championship and the action will go into the sixth day if complete overs are not bowled inside the five days. A total of 90 overs have to be bowled per day in a Test match.
Usually, the teams aren't able to bowl complete overs and the play is often extended by half an hour. The ICC has specifically mentioned that the Reserve Day will not be used just to compute a result. It means that if the match ends in a draw, then the play won't go into the Reserve Day.
"A reserve day is in place for the WTC Final on June 12 and can be used to make up for any loss of playing time during the five scheduled days, not to keep playing until one side wins," the ICC has said in its release.
The final of 2021 WTC was completed on Reserve Day due to rain washing out the opening day between India and New Zealand. The Kane Williamson-led side defeated Virat Kohli's India to lift the trophy.
Rohit Sharma and Pat Cummins will lead their respective teams in an ICC final for the first time in their careers.
