Israel launched air attacks on southern Lebanon and ‘retaliatory airstrikes’ in the Gaza Strip on April 7. The airstrikes launched by the Israeli Defence Forces targeted the Palestinian group Hamas following a spate of reported rocket attacks on the country from Lebanon and Gaza. This comes after tensions soared between Tel Aviv, Palestine and Hamas which governs or rules the Gaza Strip following violent Israeli police raids at the Al-Aqsa mosque in occupied East Jerusalem. The raids, during which stun grenades were used, leaving several injured, were carried out on for two days as Palestinians gathered at the holy site for Ramadan prayers. Hamas, which is known for its armed resistance to Israel, had called on Palestinians in the West Bank “to go en masse to the Al-Aqsa mosque to defend it”. How has Lebanon reacted? Will this lead to the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah joining Hamas against Israel? Could this lead to a wider conflict consuming the Middle East?
