Following the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final debacle, India are set for a rare one-month break, which comes at the perfect time as it will give the all-format players time to refresh their batteries ahead of a gruelling season that will see them play the Asia Cup and the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
India's next assignment will be the tour of the West Indies, in which the Rohit Sharma-led side will play two tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is. While the official schedule has yet to be released, the series will take place starting July 12 and is set to continue until mid-August.
The Test series will be an important one as it will kickstart India's campaign in the 2023–25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. After two back-to-back final defeats, the Rohit-led outfit will aim to be third time lucky in 2025 at Lord's.
However, India face a tough fight to get to the summit clash away as they have a hard schedule that will see them play a home series against England and play away to both South Africa and Australia. Hence, the India team will have to be at their best to reach the summit clash This will mean India needs to shape a squad that is in peak form over the next two years and, hence, embrace a transition with most members of the current team in their mid-30s.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the process could kickstart in the West Indies with Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav's places under the scanner immediately. The likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mukesh Kumar, who were part of the reserves in WTC, could get a call-up and make their debut on the Caribbean island.
Elsewhere, the same report adds that the T20I team has already started to phase out senior players following the 2022 T20 World Cup, and that is set to continue in the West Indies. Hardik Pandya is expected to lead the team in the shortest format as preparations continue for the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the likes of Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rinku Singh, and Jitesh Sharma could be called up to the team after an impressive 2023 IPL campaign.
The PTI report also states that Mohit Sharma could also earn a comeback after a brilliant IPL 2023 season that saw him take 27 wickets.
