New Delhi: A clash broke out between Delhi police officials and wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday night. The wrestlers alleged that drunk police personnel abused them and manhandled them. The scuffle started after some wrestlers decided to bring in folding beds to sleep at night after the daylong rains.
A group of ace Indian wrestlers has been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar since April 23 against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment. The MP has rejected the charges, but said that he is ready to resign as WFI chief if Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the BJP asks him to.
In a video being widely shared on social media, some of the protesters can be heard accusing a police personnel of attacking two wrestlers under the influence of alcohol. The wrestlers alleged that the policemen thrashed and abused the women protesters. The scuffle also led to head injuries to a couple of protesters.
“The mattresses got wet due to rain, so we were bringing folding beds for sleeping, but the police did not allow that. Drunk policeman Dharemendra abused Vinesh Phogat and got involved in a scuffle with us,” Former wrestler Rajveer was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who is leading the protest, alleged that she was abused and pushed around by policemen. Bajrang Punia's wife Sangeeta also claimed that she was pushed around by policemen.
Police deny charges
Police, however, refuted the allegations and said that no wrestler was beaten up.
"There were a few men who tried bringing cots to the protest site. When the policemen deployed at the spot asked them about the cots, they got aggressive and the protesters joined them. They wrongfully restrained a policeman and accused him of being drunk, which was not the case. Police personnel are at the site and the situation is now under control. No protester was beaten up,” a senior police officer said.
In an official statement, the Delhi Police said that during the protest, senior AAP leader Somnath Bharti came at the protest site along with folding beds without permission. “On intervention, the supporters became aggressive in trying to get the beds out of the truck. Subsequently, a minor altercation took place in which Somnath Bharti along with 2 others was detained,” they said.
