Kolkata: Robots Take Charge For Cleaning Manholes In New Town
The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has unveiled three robots costing ₹34 lakhs each to clean manholes and drainage in New Town. Equipped with poisonous gas sensors, the robots are estimated to replace manual labour and help in extensive cleaning. The robots will operate through an integrated command system, and there will be a specific app to operate them. The civic body will use the machines as part of pre-monsoon preparation to check drains and sewerage line.

Each robot costs Rs 34 lakhs, which also includes expenditure on getting a generator and running it for the robot.
The robots are said to replace manual labour and help in extensive cleaning of the drainage, officials said.
The robots are equipped with facility to pick up waste from manholes by extending its arm up to 1.7 metres.
"The machines also have poisonous gas sensors which will be able to detect formation of such gas inside manholes in a specific area," TOI said, quoting an official.
As compared to manual labour, robots will be able to clean drains faster.
"The machines will be in addition to the suction jetting machines which are already in use across New Town. There will be specific apps to operate the robot machines through an integrated command system," said an official.
As part of pre-monsoon preparations, the civic body is checking drains and sewerage line that whether it is free from blockage or not.
