The steep rise in airfares of popular tourist destinations is causing middle-class families to cancel their summer holiday plans. Air fares to destinations like Srinagar, Goa, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Dehradun, and Kathmandu have increased to exorbitant levels, becoming unaffordable for many travelers. The surge in prices has resulted in increasing cancellations over the past week, leaving families disappointed and seeking alternative options.
Rajeshwar Singh, an executive in a telecom company, told IANS that the turning airfares to Srinagar have rendered his family's planned trip unfeasible. With one-way airfares ranging between Rs 11,000 and Rs 18,000, Singh's family of five cannot afford the steep costs. Additionally, reports of increased taxi fares in Srinagar have further exacerbated the financial burden.
Similarly, others have faced the same dilemma. Several individuals opting for road travel to Uttarakhand due to high one-way fares ranging from Rs 8,000 to Rs 11,000 on the Lucknow-Dehradun route. The situation has led to overcrowding in tourist destinations like Mukteshwar, where finding hotel accommodations is becoming problematic.
The rising airfares have become a major setback for middle-class families. The high cost of a one-way ticket to Kathmandu, ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000, has made it impossible for them to afford a family trip. Even alternative destinations like Goa remain out of reach for many due to the inflated prices.
Travel and tour operators have witnessed a significant increase in cancellations due to the soaring prices in the industry. The surge in air fares has also led to skyrocketing hotel tariffs, making it increasingly difficult for the common man to plan affordable vacations. This scenario has left families disappointed and worried about the future possibility of planning holidays.
Although air tariffs are expected to decrease in July, the reopening of schools during that period limits the opportunities for family vacations. Travel agencies and individuals are grappling with the dilemma of finding affordable options amidst the ongoing price surge in the travel industry.
