Mumbai: The 'Regreening Vulnerable Neighbourhoods' initiative is currently focusing on revitalizing five open spaces in the M East ward, an impoverished locality in the city. The project aims to transform these neglected community areas into vibrant and resilient spaces that are accessible to women and children, while also mitigating the impacts of climate change.
One of the locations undergoing transformation is the Lallubhai Compound in Mankhurd, where a former playground and a community space are being converted into an urban grove. Previously, these spaces were occasionally used by residents for activities like drinking and smoking. However, the project seeks to repurpose them for positive use.
Additionally, the project includes the revitalization of the Deen Dayal Maidan recreational ground, as well as the Trombay Public High School and Shahaji Nagar Public School in the Cheeta Camp area.
Since March 2022, the project has actively engaged with local communities, including youth associations and building societies, to involve them in the process of repurposing these spaces and enhancing their green cover.
For instance, the community space will now serve as a study area for students and provide a shaded area for residents to seek refuge from the scorching heat in the concrete surroundings.
