Mumbai rain: IMD predicts light showers for city this week

Mumbai: In a major respite for Mumbaikars, sudden evening showers lashed the financial capital on Tuesday bringing day temperatures significantly down. The day temperature dropped below 38.5 degrees Celsius, as seen over the weekend, and strong winds continued to blow in the city for yet another day.
In a seven day forecast up to June 19, IMD officials have said light rain is very likely on all days till June 17, but have ruled out the possibility of any intense showers during this period. The weather department has further predicted partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunderstorm on June 18 and 19.
Though lower than what it was over the weekend, day temperature in Mumbai continues to stay above normal. On Tuesday, the IMD Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees, which was three degrees above normal, while the IMD Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 33.4 degrees, which was one degree above normal.
Meanwhile, night temperatures in Mumbai saw a rise compared to a day ago. On Tuesday morning, the IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 27.9 degrees minimum temperatures as compared to 24.5 degree Celsius recorded the previous day, while the Colaba observatory recorded 27.5 degrees as compared to 24 degrees recorded a day ago.

Cyclone Biparjoy likely to move northwards from today

As per weathermen, strong winds are expected to stay till Wednesday when the extremely severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy is likely to move northwards.
"It is very likely to move nearly northwards till 14th morning, then move north, north eastwards and cross Saurashtra & Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) around noon of June 15, as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph," said IMD.

When will Monsoon arrive in Mumbai?

Monsoon in Mumbai has already missed its official onset date of June 11 this year. "The effect of the existing system (cyclone) needs to end and a proper monsoon flow needs to set in requiring cloud formation for intense rains to be recorded," said an official.
