Mumbai: A car accident on the Nashik stretch of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway in the early hours of Monday resulted in four fatalities and four serious injuries, according to a police official. The incident occurred in Khambale Shivar in the Sinanr taluka of the district.
The car involved was a Toyota Innova traveling from Mumbai to Shirdi. The accident took place between midnight and 1 am, with preliminary investigations suggesting that a tire burst caused the driver to lose control and collide with the divider.
The deceased individuals have been identified as Razzaq Ahmed Sheikh (55), Sattar Sheikh Lala Sheikh (65), Sultana Sattar Sheikh (50), who died at the scene, and Faiyaz Dagubhai Sheikh (40), who succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital.
Among the four passengers who sustained serious injuries, one has been transferred to Nashik for advanced treatment, while the others are currently hospitalized in Shirdi. Wavi police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations into the incident.
Meanwhile, a senior police official from the State Highway Police revealed that between December 12 of the previous year and April 30, 2023, a total of 39 people have lost their lives and 143 have been injured in accidents on the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway.
During a media briefing, the official attributed "road hypnotism" as one of the causes of these accidents, referring to an altered mental state experienced by drivers due to automaticity or the tendency to perform tasks without actively thinking about them.
The State Highway Police is working on addressing this issue, having recorded 358 accidents on the Samruddhi Corridor during the mentioned period. These accidents include 24 cases resulting in the loss of 39 lives and 143 injuries in 54 incidents.
Additionally, the official shared data on road accidents in Maharashtra, stating that in 2022, there were 15,224 deaths due to road crashes in the state. Two-wheeler and three-wheeler riders accounted for 57% of the fatalities, while pedestrian deaths constituted 21%. Furthermore, 43% of the accidents occurred on Other District Roads (ODR) across Maharashtra.
The Nagpur to Shirdi phase of the 720-kilometer Samruddhi Corridor was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December of the preceding year, with a total length of 520 kilometers.
