Defence minister Rajnath Singh is likely to begin the International Yoga Day proceedings on June 21 with a session on INS Vikrant, India’s newest aircraft carrier.
Singh will be flying down to Kochi, headquarters of the Indian Navy’s Southern Command, where the 45,000 tonne aircraft carrier is currently stationed, for the function. A yoga enthusiast, the 71-year old Defence Minister will participate in the event. The Southern naval commander, Vice Admiral M.A. Hampiholi, is likely to be present during the event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be participating in the World Yoga Day event, but he will be in New York. It is likely to take place in the United Nations complex in New York, but it is still being finalised. He will move to Washington DC after the yoga session. The meetings with US President Joe Biden and other leaders begin the next day.
Yoga, increasingly popular all over the world, is being seen as part of resurgent India’s soft power strengths. The United Nations decided that June 21 would be World Yoga Day in 2014.
