Will you believe if one tells 'Miyazaki' - the world's most-priced mango variety is sold at around Rs 2.75 lakh per kg at the international market? Don't feel bluffed, because it's true.
Now, the "priceless" mango variety is made available at the seventh edition of Siliguri's three-day-long Mango Festival. It was presented at the event by Shoukat Hussein, a Miyazaki farmer from Labhpur in West Bengal's Birbhum district.
Shoukat Hussein, a debut participant in the festival, said he bought Miyazaki's drafting saplings from Bangladesh and planted them in his garden. He later decided to grow it for the market and the yield was positive. "It can be grown in any part of the state and change the economic condition of the farmers," Shoukat Hussein told ANI on Friday.
The Miyazaki mango production was started in California in the year of 1940. However, they are named after the Japanese city of Miyazaki, where it is abundantly cultivated, news reports said. A recent addition to the Indian farmers' checklist, it is also known as 'Red Sun' and in Bengali 'Surja Dim' (Red egg).
The Siliguri's Mango Festival kicked off on June 9 at a mall in Siliguri organised by Modella Caretaker Centre & School (MCCS), with Association for Conservation & Tourism (ACT), the ANI report said. More than 262 varieties of mangoes will be displayed at the festival and 55 growers from nine districts of West Bengal participated in the festival.
