In a rather shocking incident, legendary footballer Lionel Messi was detained at the Beijing Airport ahead of Argentina's clash against Australia at the Workers Stadium in the Chinese capital on Thursday (June 15).
As Messi landed in the country to lead his country in the big clash, he was stopped by the Chinese Border Police at the airport. Reports have emerged that there were some issues with Messi's visa as he carried his Spanish passport instead of his Argentina passport, which did not have a Chinese visa. After about 30 minutes, the matter was resolved, and Messi walked out of the airport.

Messi had one of the greatest moments of his career on Chinese soil when he was part of the Argentina team that won the Olympic Gold Medal in 2008 after beating Nigeria in the summit clash. Messi, aged 21, assisted Angel Di Maria's goal in the summit clash at the famous Bird's Nest Stadium. The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner scored two goals in the competition.
After Argentina's clash with Australia, Messi & Co. will face Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Central Jakarta on Monday (June 19), which will mark the end of the 2022–23 football season for him. Despite his troubling time at PSG, it was a memorable campaign for Messi, as he achieved his elusive dream of winning the World Cup when he led Argentina to glory in Qatar last year after beating France in a dramatic final.
After a few weeks of rest, Messi will start a new journey in his career in July after he joins Inter Miami. After deciding against renewing his contract at PSG, Messi has decided to move away from European football and join the David Beckham-owned Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit based in the American town of Miami.
Messi joined PSG in 2021 after his almost two-decade stay at Barcelona came to an abrupt end.
