New Delhi: Among the 500 shooting locations notified in the national capital, Chandni Chowk has emerged as the most preferred spot. The Delhi government has received 59 applications for permission for film shoots, and Chandni Chowk has been chosen for blockbusters like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Delhi 6.
According to data from the state government, production houses from various parts of the country now prefer the capital city for shooting films, web series, TV serials, commercials, and documentaries.
Despite the potential logistical challenges, Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi has been a popular location for film shoots due to its vibrant ambience, historical charm, raw aesthetic, architectural beauty, and other aspects.
The latest films shot recently in Chandni Chowk include the C Sankaran Nair biopic by Akshay Kumar and Ananya Panda and other works like Shehzada, Pataal Lok and 12th Fail.
Film houses have also sought applications for shooting at India Gate, CP, INA Dilli Haat, Kartavya Path, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Delhi Metro, and Lutyens' Delhi in the past year since the government launched its film policy.
With the aim of promoting the city as a hub for movie production through various measures, the Aam Admi Party (AAP) government launched the 'Delhi Film Policy' in May 2022. The policy includes the establishment of a Rs 30 crore fund to support producers, hosting an international film festival every year, and ensuring online clearance for shooting within 15 days.
To obtain permission for shooting, individuals need to visit the Delhi Tourism website - www.delhitourism.gov.in - and apply for film shooting by clicking on the 'e-Film Clearance' icon. The online process will then begin to obtain clearances from relevant agencies in a time-bound manner.
Under the film policy, which is being implemented by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), the government has also provisioned a subsidy of up to Rs 3 crore with certain conditions, such as the number of shooting days, location, branding of Delhi in the movie, and local hiring of actors, among other factors.
