India's misery in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final continued as the star Australian batter Steve Smith got yet another century against India. Smith reached the milestone in the first over of the second day of play as India continued to struggle in the marquee clash.
Smith reached the milestone after smashing back-to-back boundaries against Mohammed Siraj and playing a total of 229 balls to reach the three-figure mark. Smith has put up a partnership of more than 200 runs with Travis Head, who also completed his 150 in the first minutes of the opening session.
By virtue of this knock, Smith has achieved the rare feat of scoring a century at home, away, and in a neutral venue against India. This is the second time Smith has scored a ton against India in an ICC knockout game; he did so in the 2015 World Cup semi-final at the Sydney Cricket Ground too.
Smith equalled Joe Root's record for the most centuries in Test cricket against India. Both Smith and Root have now scored nine centuries each against India. The Australian vice-captain has scored five centuries against India in Australia, three in India, and one in England.
