Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead in his Mumbai apartment on June 14, 2020. His team, in a press release had confirmed his death, stating, "It pains us to share that Sushant Singh Rajput is no longer with us. We request his fans to keep him in their thoughts and celebrate his life, and his work as they have done so far. We request the media to help us maintain privacy at this moment of grief." While the country mourned his loss, the aftermath of the actor's demise was unexpected. Soon after his funeral, his father KK Singh filed an FIR accusing Sushant's then-girlfriend, actor Rhea Chakraborty of abetting suicide and money laundering. Following the news of Sushant Singh Rajput's death, numerous celebrities including Anushka Sharma, Bhumi Pednekar, Anil Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Karan Johar remembered the late actor. It was also during this time that actor Kangana Ranaut made startling allegations against the industry, revolving around bullying and drugs, further adding fodder to the death case.

Sushant's brother-in-law OP Singh suspected foul play in the death. The Additional Director General of Police posted as Special Officer in the Haryana Chief Minister's Office sought a probe into the incident.
