Mumbai: The work of the Mumbai Metro-5 project is progressing fast in many locations in the city. In a significant step that would facilitate the smooth construction of the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro corridor, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has given its approval to make the 3km route between Dhamankar Naka and Temghar an underground route instead of an elevated one.
With the elevated line, the Metro project would have affected several commercial entities as well as households on the route. However, the rain tunnel will prevent any such displacement. It will also help MMRDA start work on Phase-2 between Bhiwandi-Kalyan.

Mumbai Metro Line 5 - Key Highlights

  • The Metro Line 5 is a significant corridor covering 25 kilometres with 15 stations. As per the earlier plan, the entire stretch was proposed as an elevated link.

  • It will also have connections with the Central Railway network.
  • The proposed stations are 1. Balkum Naka, 2. Kasheli, 3. Kalher, 4. Purna, 5. Anjurphata, 6. Dhamankar Naka, 7. Bhiwandi, 8. Gopal Nagar, 9. Temghar, 10. Rajnouli, 11. Gove Gaon, 12. Kon Gaon, 13. Lal Chowki, 14. Kalyan Station, 15. Kalyan APMC.
  • It will reduce the current travel time by anything between 50 per cent and 75 per cent.
  • The metro line is expected to benefit a large number of residents and office-goers in government and commercial hubs in Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan. By 2031, the MMRDA expects a daily ridership of 3.025 lakhs.
  • The estimated project cost of the Metro line is Rs 8416.51 core. The line is expected to start commercial operations in 2025.
