Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan weighed in on the most talked about comparison in world cricket between India great Virat Kohli and Pakistan captain Babar Azam. While talking to the local reporters, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan said that although he has not been an active follower of cricket in the recent past but firmly believes that the Pakistan captain is as good a player as Kohli is, adding that they are of the same class.
"I haven't recently seen cricket, but I believe that Virat Kohli and Babar Azam belong to the same class. Babar Azam can surpass Virat Kohli; he is that good, from what I have seen," the former Pakistan all-rounder told the local reporters, as quoted by Cricket Pakistan.
The 70-year-old remains one of the greatest all-rounders to have ever played the game and it was under his captaincy that Pakistan won the 1992 World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.
Kohli, who was not in great nick in the past couple of years roared back to form last year in the Asia Cup and played one of the best T20I innings against Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2022 held in Australia. The Indian Premier League (IPL) saw him score 639 runs, including two centuries and six half-centuries. Although he has been among the runs in white-ball cricket, the Indian stalwart has not been able to replicate the same kind of form in red-ball cricket.
Babar Azam, on the other hand, has played 47 Tests and scored 3696 runs at an average of 48.63. The Pakistan captain boasts a staggering average of 59.17 in 100 ODIs and has scored 5089 runs in the format. Azam, however, has often been criticised for maintaining a poor strike-rate in T20Is. In 104 T20Is, the 28-year-old has a strike-rate of 128.40, which may be considered below average, given the nature of the format.
