Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra is well known for being active on his social media accounts. Apart from business, he often shares posts on off-beat topics, successful and inspiring stories that attract his followers.
This time, the Indian billionaire has put forth a question before Union Highways and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, a name synonymous with innovation, development, infrastructure, and progress across the country, through a post.
Mahindra has shared a video of the Veluwemeer aqueduct bridge in the Netherlands, considered to be one of the engineering marvels of the modern era, and asked Gadkari if India can too have the structure.
Mahindra who seemed to be captivated by the unique construction of the bridge express his desire for similar infrastructure in India.
Sharing the video of the Veluwemeer aqueduct bridge, Mahindra wrote, “Wait…What?? Can we do this too, @nitin_gadkari ji?”
The original video tweeted from Engineering Insider’s handle on June 12 and retweeted by Anand Mahindra, has caught the attention of netizens. The video has so far received 1.5 million views and over 20.6k likes.
The clip retweeted by Mahindra shows cars passing on the bridge and seemingly disappearing under a strip of water towards the centre of the structure and then emerging on the other side of the bridge. The structure creates an illusion as if the cars vanish underwater before coming out on the other side.

Actually, the bridge is designed in a way that the road goes below the water level briefly while not only remaining dry but also allowing boats to pass through the strip of water that flows above the structure.

Veluwemeer Aqueduct Bridge

Inaugurated in 2002, the Veluwemeer Aqueduct is a stunning architecture and engineering work located near the Dutch city of Harderwijk in the Netherlands. It connects the mainland with the neighbouring island called Flevoland, the largest artificial island in the world. The Veluwemeer Aqueduct allows vehicular traffic as well as waterborne traffic to pass the stretch without hindering the other. Around 28,000 vehicles pass from the bridge each day.

How does Veluwemeer Aqueduct bridge works?

The Veluwemeer Aqueduct is a shallow 9.83 feet deep water bridge that allows small boats and other shallow-draft water vehicles to pass over the road safely and dry. Along with boat passage over the road, pedestrian walkways can be found on both sides of the bridge. The road itself also includes designated cycle lanes, as per Interesting Engineering.
