A short clip showing a woman paying for a packaged food item at a store in China by simply scanning her palm on a machine has gone viral.

But is it a clean video and does a palm based payment system actually exist?Yes, it does.

According to a report by South China Morning Post, Chinese social media giant Tencent Holdings is allowing Beijing metro passengers to pay for their rides using only their palms.

The payment method was lunched on Tencent's WeChat Pay service. It's called WeChat Palm Pay that allows users to complete a transaction by holding their palm in front of a scanner.

Other reports say the service was initially launched for only passengers on Beijing’s metro system on the Daxing Airport Express Line.

However, the new viral clip suggests that businesses have also started using the technology.

Sharing the clip on Twitter, Tanus Yegen wrote that the 'scanning device reads biometric data and automatically debits money from the buyer's account'.

His tweet adds: "The system works in poor light and even "remembers" the position of the palm of a particular user."
