KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • India will face Australia in the WTC 2023 final.
  • The match will take place at the Oval Stadium in London.
  • Rohit Sharma will lead Team India in the WTC 2023 final.
The Rohit Sharma-led Indian men’s cricket team will face Australia in the final of the World Test Championship 2023 next week. The summit clash will take place at the Oval Stadium in London from June 7 to 11. After a forgetful show in the inaugural edition, the Pat Cummins-led side finished at the top of the WTC 2021–23 points table to become the first team to qualify for the decider, and India joined them after Sri Lanka suffered a defeat against New Zealand in the first Test of the two-match series in March 2023.
This year’s final will be the second straight season when India will feature in the final of the WTC. The world’s No. 1 Test team played in the summit clash of the 2019–21 WTC as well but failed to win the title. They lost against New Zealand by eight wickets in the match that was played at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Southampton.
The final of WTC 2023 is expected to be a hard-fought contest, as both India and Australia have many star players in their ranks who would like to give their all to help their team bag the prestigious trophy. But the nature of Test cricket is such that there are chances that the match might end in a draw.
So, what will happen if the match ends without a result? Well, even if Australia finished at the top of the WTC 2021–23 points table, it doesn’t mean that they will be given the title if the match is drawn.
According to the rules, if the WTC final ends in a draw, then both teams will be declared joint winners of the World Test Championship.
If rain plays spoilsport in the final, then, like last year’s edition, a reserve day has been kept in place to make up for the lost time. But it will only be considered if there is a substantial loss in net playing time or a considerable loss of overs in the initial five days. Net playing time for every Test translates to 30 hours of play, six hours per day, or 90 overs per day.
The reserve day will come into effect if the set time of six hours is not fulfilled or the full quota of 90 overs per day is not completed.
