Bengaluru: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has increased toll charges on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway by 22 per cent. The toll rates were revised in March, but was put on hold due to the assembly elections. They started levying the new rates from Monday onwards.
As per the revised rates, light motor vehicles will have to pay Rs 165 for a single journey and Rs 250 if they are returning the same day. This is a steep increase from the previous rate which was Rs 135 for a single journey and Rs 205 for return trips. For buses and trucks, the rate is Rs 565 for a single journey and Rs 850 for return trips on the same day. It was Rs 460 earlier and Rs 690 respectively.
After the second stretch starts operations, the toll fee for cars, jeeps and vans is expected to be Rs 300.

The expressway witnessed multiple protests earlier over the toll charges with many alleging that the rates were too high.
With the NHAI implementing the revised rates, several citizens took to social media to express their opposition.
"Modiji, three months ago you inaugurated the Bangalore to Mysore Expressway and the toll fixed was Rs 135 for one way. Within 3 months, the toll fee has gone up to Rs 165. Is it not looting citizens? Based on what Nitin fixed the price and how come an increase in no time?," a Twitter user Srinivasa R Velamala asked.
Adding to the discussion, another netizen Prasanna BN asked "Why Bangalore Mysore Expressway toll is hiked within a span of a quarter! How it is possible?".
Some motorists alleged that the NHAI implemented the hike discreetly without any public announcement.
Following the protests in the first week of April, the NHAI officials had said they will be revising the toll rates for short-distance commutes to bring it down to a "reasonable" rate.
As per the rules governing NHAI, the authority is duty-bound to increase toll rates every year on April 1.
Built at a cost of Rs 9000 crore, the 118 km access-controlled highway cuts down the travel time between the two key cities in Karnataka to just 75 minutes. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 12.
