World Blood Donor Day 2023 World Blood Donor Day is an international event that takes place annually on June 14. World Health Organisation (WHO), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations (IFBDO) and the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) played a major role in recognizing the day.

The day came into being in 2014 to encourage people to donate blood and understand its importance. It also aims to show gratitude to those who have selflessly come forward to donate their blood for noble causes. Meanwhile, June 14 was particularly selected to honour the birth of an Austrian biologist named Karl Landsteiner, who found it was possible to transfuse blood between people. He made blood transfusion possible by discovering the ABO blood group system in 1901.

The theme of World Blood Donor Day 2023 is “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often”. The theme encourages people to support transfusion patients by becoming blood donors. Additionally, it highlights the importance of being regular blood and plasma donors to help maintain a sustainable blood bank for those in need. As per reports, the world is suffering from a shortage of blood and plasma. According to WHO, only 118.54 million blood donations are collected globally. Therefore, it is impertinent for people to join the donor community.
