India were on the wrong end of a controversial decision by the third umpire as they walked out to chase a massive total of 444 at the Oval in the 2023 World Championship (WTC) final against Australia after Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave the Indians a quick start.
On the last ball before the tea break, Shubman Gill edged a delivery from Scott Boland into the hands of Cameron Green. The Australian all-rounder made a sensational diving catch with his left hand. However, the decision was sent to the third umpire. The replays did not conclusively show that the ball was safely taken by Green, with many feeling that the ball touched the ground and the Australian star did not have it in his control.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was visibly fuming at the decision as his reaction to the big screen declaring Gill out caught the eye of fans. The Indian captain was seen arguing with the on-field umpire about the decision too, but to no avail as Gill had to make his way back.
