After losing the World Test Championship 2023 final by 209 runs against Australia at the Oval on Sunday (June 11), the Indian men’s cricket team will stay out of action for one complete month. With no series scheduled to take place between this period, Indian players will get a much-needed break and then resume the bilateral assignments from next month, where in the first tour, the Men in Blue will travel to the West Indies and will play two Tests, three ODIs, and as many as five T20Is. The schedule for the all-format tour was announced by the BCCI on Monday (June 12).
According to the reports, many youngsters who have performed well in IPL 2023 and domestic cricket are likely to get rewarded for their superb show. Here's a look at five players who’re likely to make their debut on the upcoming West Indies tour.
Yashasvi Jaiswal: Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 625 runs in 14 matches of the IPL 2023 to create an all-time record for scoring the most runs in an IPL season by an uncapped player. He was included in India’s WTC 2023 final squad as one of the three reserve players, and according to a report in PTI, the 21-year-old youngster is now set to earn his maiden India Test and T20I call-up for the West Indies tour next month.
Mukesh Kumar: Bengal pacer Mukesh Kumar was included in India’s ODI squad for the home series against South Africa last year and then found a place in the T20I squad for the home series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand earlier this year. But he didn’t get a chance to make his India debut. The pacer was one of the three reserve players for the WTC 2023 final and is now set to earn his maiden Test call-up for the West Indies tour.
Rinku Singh: Rinku Singh lit up the IPL 2023 with his superb show for the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he finished as the top scorer for the franchise as well. He won many matches single-handedly for the Shah Rukh Khan-owned side and is now set to don the India blue during the five-match series against the West Indies.
Jitesh Sharma: Punjab Kings’ wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma was part of India’s T20I squad for the home series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand in January 2023, and after an outstanding performance for PBKS in the IPL 2023, he is likely to make his debut during the five-match T20I series against the West Indies.
Sarfaraz Khan: Sarfaraz Khan has scored close to 2500 runs in the last three Ranji Trophy seasons combined. He was unlucky to miss out on a place in the Indian team during the WTC 2021–23 cycle, but in all likelihood he will get selected for the two-match Test series, which starts on July 12 in Dominica.
