Harrison Marshall converted the dumpster into his abode in the month of January. He said he came up with the idea after struggling to find an affordable home in London amid the cost-of-living crisis that has seen inflation hit a 30-year-high in the UK.
His search for a new home in London began after he returned from Central America and Southeast Asia. However, he quickly realised he wouldn't be able to rent any home within his budget.
"I was trying to find somewhere that would fit my budget and criteria, but if I found somewhere there'd be 100 other people also looking for the same spot and it'd be gone in five minutes. So it made me start thinking that there's got to be another way for me to do this," he told Insider.
So, after spending months searching for a rented accommodation, Harrison realised it would be best to find something that wouldn't take away all or most of his salary.
And this thought inspired him to starts checking out large dumpsters, which Brits call skips.
Skips are found just about everywhere in the UK. They are a common sight on streets of cities and small towns.
Harrison's skip is located in Bermondsey in southeast London.
According to Insider, the 28-year-old designed and built the dumpster home himself with hus seven-year knowledge and experience of working on design and construction projects.
He had even set up an organization called Caukin Studio with some friends he met while studying architecture.
Marshall said his dunpster home was inspired by a project that Caukin Studio undertook.
"With its ups and downs, I’ve turned my living situation into an art piece. It shines light on the absurdity of London’s housing crisis in a way that makes people smile and think. [...] I don’t recommend replicating it. I hope that I can move out soon, but I certainly won’t be swapping it for no savings and a small, damp room," he said.
