Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh picked his T20I squad for India for the tour of West Indies scheduled to begin on July 12 with a couple of Test matches. Harbhajan picked Hardik Pandya as the captain of his side on expected lines while Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal found a place in the squad as openers with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan also making the cut.
The former India off-spinner decided to drop all the senior players and while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were expected to take a break from the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, given their workload and keeping in mind the ODI World Cup set to be held in India later in the year, the exclusion of star India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja did come as a surprise.
"I am trying to pick a team that can become the main team in the coming years," said the former India cricketer on his YouTube channel.
Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson also failed to make it to the squad but that isn't much of a surprise since his performance in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) faded away as the tournament progressed. The 42-year-old picked Axar Patel ahead of Jadeja and can be termed as a like-for-like replacement.
The stars of IPL 2023, which include the likes of Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Jitesh Sharma, Harshit Rana and Akash Madhwal have all been picked while Suryakumar Yadav pretty much becomes an automatic selection in the shorter format of the game.
Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi are the two spinners who made the cut along with Axar. Shivam Dube and Nitish Rana are some notable exclusions who failed to make it to Harbhajan's T20I squad.
