New Delhi: The presence of Predator drones among the items to be talked about at the Defence Acquisition Council or DAC headed by defence minister Rajnath Singh and including the three chiefs is perhaps, an indication that they are firmly on the discussions agenda when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden meet later this month.
The DAC clearance suggests “need” and on the agenda are about 27 Predator drones for the armed forces. There are 8 for the Indian Army, 8 for the Indian Air Force and maybe, 11 for the Indian Navy. Regardless of whether the deal is actually done in Washington DC during the visit, it is a clear sign that this multibillion dollar deal is on the table. The announcement of the RS 32,000 crore deal, when it’s done, will be made in Washington DC.
The Navy is particularly keen on the Predator for its ability to be a very good eye in the sky. It has two, on lease, and during the preliminary meetings, apparently spoke of the need for a few more, which is why the number of 15 was arrived at. The Navy is happy with the two Predators on lease.
Of course, it is not a guarantee that the deal will be done, but there is a clear chance that it’s going to be seriously discussed.
