New Delhi: A letter petition has been addressed to Chief Justice of India seeking urgent intervention to prevent the "mahapanchayat" which is scheduled to be held on June 15 in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand amid continued communal threats against Muslims.
The petition was filed by Delhi University professor Apoorvanand Jha and poet Ashok Vajpeyi on June 13. The petition demanded an immediate ban on proposed mahapanchayat by right-wing groups in Uttarkashi.
The petitioners have asked the apex court to intervene in the matter alleging an attempt to incite communal riots in the city.
Threat poster against Muslim shopkeepers
Recently, posters surfaced in Uttarkashi town warning Muslim shopkeepers to leave the place. The posters which appeared in the city' Purola main market warned Muslim traders to leave by June 15.
The threat of mahapanchayat came after tensions in the area over an alleged abduction attempt on a minor girl in May. One of the accused in the case belong to minority community and other from majority community.
On May 27, police arrested both the accused for the alleged kidnapping bid. The local residents alleged that it was a case of 'love jihad', a term used by right-wing groups and conspiracy theorists. The term is used to target men of minority community alleging that they woo Hindu women. However, courts and the central government don't recognised such a term.
What petition says
According to the petition letter to CJI, "If the mahapanchayat was allowed to happen, it could lead to a boil in communal tensions in the State." The petitioners further said that an urgent judicial intervention is required “to protect the life, limb, and property” of those under attack and against whom the mahapanchayat has been scheduled to be held."
