Haryana Farmers' Protest: Kisan Unions Plan To Block Delhi-Amritsar National Highway

Farmers from Haryana on Monday blocked the national highway to Delhi in protest over their demand for Minimum Support Price for sunflower seed.

Kurukshetra: As disagreement persists between farmers and Haryana government over the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of sunflower seeds, the farmers' union has decided to block Delhi-Amritsar National Highway in protest. The decision was taken in a meeting in Haryana's Kurukshetra on Tuesday.
The farmers union said that all farmer groups will fight collectively for the MSP. The unions said the agitation will only intensify.
On Monday, a large number of farmers gathered in Kurukshetra's Pipli for a mahapanchayat to press for demand for MSP of sunflower seed and other demands. Leaders from various khaps including Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait, Olympic medal-winning wrestler Bajrang Punia, took part in the mahapanchayat.
The protests come after Haryana government's decision not to procure sunflower seeds on minimum support price (MSP) and induct the crop under the Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana.
The BJP-led state government had decided to stop the procurement of sunflower seed on the MSP and to procure it under the Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana at the rate of Rs 1,000 per quintal.
The farmers have been saying that they are selling the produce at Rs 4,000 per quintal to private buyers against the MSP of Rs 6,400.
On Monday, Haryana farmers also blocked the national highway to Delhi. The protesting farmers gathered on the highway to hold Mahapanchayat in protest against the Haryana government's decision not to buy sunflower seeds at MSP. Due to the protest in Kurukshetra's Pipli village, the traffic was reportedly diverted on the Delhi-Chandigarh route for avoiding congestion.
