Kolkata: Flyover that connects New Town to Sector V has opened for the public on Thursday easing commute between the areas. The flyover, spanning the Kestopur canal, extends from near Balaka Abasan in New Town's Action Area I to the Sector V Ring Road near Godrej Waterside, situated in front of the Panache housing complex.
This 650-meter-long flyover plays a crucial role in providing an alternative route from Salt Lake and Sector V to New Town, aiming to reduce travel time for commuters traveling from EM Bypass to the township.
Every day, a large number of vehicles commute to and from New Town, transporting people to their workplaces and back home. The Major Arterial Road (MAR), stretching 10.5 kilometers, serves as the primary link between New Town and Salt Lake on one end and the airport on the other, often resulting in heavy traffic congestion.

During peak hours in the morning, it currently takes around 45 minutes to an hour to drive from the Chingrighata intersection on the Bypass to the Unitech crossing, covering a distance of approximately 10 kilometers via the Major Arterial Road. Outside of rush hours, the same stretch can be covered in around 30 minutes.
With the opening of the flyover to light vehicles starting Friday morning, it is expected to significantly reduce the traffic volume on the Major Arterial Road. Motorists will now have the option to take the flyover and directly access the Sector V Ring Road, heading towards the Bypass while passing Nicco Park on the left.
The construction of this four-lane flyover took three years to complete. It is equipped with LED street lighting systems, which will soon be powered by solar energy, according to an official from Hidco, the organization responsible for building the flyover.
