Kerala tourism: In its bid to turn the state's tourism sector gender inclusive, the Kerala government has launched the country's first "Women-friendly Tourism". Kerala Tourism is all set to create a mobile app to further embolden that undertaking.
With the mobile application, which will furnish information about the various tourism centres in Kerala, the pioneering project has entered the second phase of its activities. The application will have all the details of women-friendly tourism products and packages, resorts, hotels, travel agencies, and homestays in addition to women-led enterprises and female tour operators and tour guides.
App content
The content for the app will be developed by the State Responsible Tourism Mission (RT Mission), the nodal agency for implementing the 'Women-Friendly Tourism' project, IANS reported.
RT Mission State Coordinator K Rupeshkumar noted that the the app would also display information about women-led handicraft and souvenir production and sales units, amenities like restrooms, camping sites, licensed houseboats, caravan parks and ethnic cuisine units in various places.
The project, which aims at the participation of 1.5 lakh women in the state, is being executed with the support of various organisations, including United Nations (UN) Women.
10,000 women-led ventures
The Kerala government has set a target of creating 10,000 women ventures and generating 30,000 jobs in the tourism sector, the report said. The State Tourism Minister, PA Mohamed Riyas, unfurled the initiative in line with the UN Women's 'Gender Inclusive Tourism' concept. This envisions women playing critical roles in the tourism sector.
"We are living in a world where it has become a trend for women to travel to far-off places in groups of their own or individually. Creating a conducive ambience for women tourists in the state is a policy priority of the government. The app on the Women-Friendly tourism project will make the visit to Kerala more pleasant and hassle-free for women," the minister said.
